D o v e t a i l i n g s   produces individual, entirely handcrafted woodworking for those who appreciate artistry, functionality, and attention to detail. At Dovetailings I create exclusive "one-off" pieces unique to my shop and expressly for my clients. I do not maintain either a showroom or an inventory of pieces, nor do I enter into production runs and manufacture several pieces of the same design, unless specified by a client.

This approach insures that the final product suits the client's desires and aesthetics, and provides him or her with a truly personal work of art.

I begin with a design, usually a small thumbnail sketch in pencil, then develop a working drawing complete with dimensions and notes. From there I'll create a maquette (a scaled model) to evaluate proportions and functionality. Once I am comfortable with the design I begin the search for wood.

Traditional craftswork relies on the technique of Joinery, of assembling two or more pieces of wood using close-fitting joints instead of fasteners. Most of these joints are ancient in design and function; mastering a repertoire of joints in part defines the craftsperson and separates craftswork from machined production.

I hand-cut the joints when either decorative or exposed; for other applications I often use the machines in my modest shop. I do not use staples, nails, screws, or any metal fasteners of any kind. Instead I rely on the traditions of joinery and the craft, and on my many years in woodworking. Using skill and patience I articulate the various parts of a cabinet or piece of furniture into a uniquely beautiful, practical, and heirloom-quality work of art that with minimal care and consideration will last for generations.
